My parents always add a new book to our Christmas gifts and while I have grown to LOVE the whole book thing, I wasn't always so crazy about it. Of course, my mom is really good at picking out books she thinks I will enjoy so as the Christmases went by and I realized she wasn't really that off with what I like, I started to really look forward to seeing what she had picked out for me. Gotta say, so far she has never failed to nail it with her picks.
But if I had some kind of 'Freaky Friday' moment at Chapters one day and had to pick out a book or two that I could squeal about, these books I'm reading right now would be my picks this month!

New York City Trails
If you are like me, obsessed with making my way to NYC or just love to travel, this book is the coolest 'travel guide' specifically designed for the young traveller who wants to map out their journey so they hit all the mad good spots of NYC! The Lonely Planet explorers Marco and Amelia guide you through all the cool stuff New York City has to offer if you're willing to be more than a basic tripper.

The Niv Bible for Teen Girls
I've noticed that people are always struggling to find 'inspiration' (sometimes in the weirdest places!) but one solution is totally simple, open a bible. This one happens to be one of my favs because it is full of explanations about the different sections of the bible, sidebars about people mentioned and a whole bunch of inspirational stuff that might just be the answer you're looking for
(I know some of my friends reading this will be in full eye-roll right now but I like to think of the bible as a 'feel good', there doesn't have to be a reason why I reach for it, it just has this way of making me 'feel good' so pick it up and read, trust 😃)

Coco Chanel
I was sent this book as a gift and even though at first I thought it was for someone younger (4-8 years old), I LOVED it!
It's part of a series about all these awesome women who did really incredible things. It's like a little history lesson wrapped up in the cutest package and covers total #bossbabes like civil rights activist Rosa Parks, artist Frida Khalo and all around ICON Audrey Hepburn. I ended up getting all the books in the series and after reading them, I couldn't wait to learn more about all the Lit ladies that did their thing back then so we could do our thing now!

The Burger Lab
Know anyone who really 'gets' burgers?? Tell me they wouldn't love to get a book dedicated to the art of the hamburger (and yes it is an art).
I come from a burger family, my grandparents have owned a super burger joint for the last 30 years and we take the hamburger seriously!
We get really creative with our burgers at my house so I totally dropped to the floor when I opened this book and flipping through the pages should not be done on an empty stomach for sure!

This isn't a new book but it has to be one of my favorites of ALL time. August Pullman is a boy who looks different. I mean really different.
And this is his story, starting from his point of view about how he just wants to be treated like everyone else when everyone else can't get past how he looks. (My eyes are getting watery just writing this because this book has burned into my brain, even when I mention it, I start re-reading parts in my head, it's just that powerful. There is a movie out which I haven't seen yet but definitely will, just have to prepare my brain for it 😓)

Grey Matter

sweater BANANA REPUBLIC     skirt GAP     boot STEVE MADDEN

The few weeks right before Christmas have to be my most favourite time of the year. I love all the fun stuff that comes with Christmas like shopping for gifts (this is the first year I am doing that on my own), celebrating with family and friends, going to church, eating all the deliciousness being served up (when else do you get a free ticket to eat cookies and drink hot cocoa almost every night??) and let's not forget opening all the pressies with my name on them!
Some people (I'm looking at you grownups!) find this time of the year crazy stressful! They tell me that maybe I love it so much because I have no other responsibilities other than making sure I'm happy and having fun but what if we all stopped stressing out just for a little bit and took a moment to remember what it was like at Christmas time when you were a kid and just really enjoyed being in that moment, even if it was only for an afternoon or night? I bet the people around you would love it (and I'm pretty sure you will too!)
Do you have any special holiday memories that bring you right back to the happiness you felt being a kid at Christmas?

Red Alert

DRESS The Gap     BOOTS Steve Madden     TIGHTS Asos

Christmas is my absolute fav time of the year! Lots of presents, lots of tasty food and lots of opportunities to put on some fancy duds that I wouldn't normally have a chance to wear! This red sparkly dress is a total dream and because it's a t-shirt style dress its so mad comfy that I never want to take it off. I paired it with my new combat boots and polka dot tights to give it my special touch but slip on a pair of flats or heels and it hits a whole other level, perfect for even the fanciest of parties!

Blazer, Jeans  GAP     Anchor bracelet KIEL JAMES PATRICK     Clutch COACH
Sunglasses OLD NAVY     Booties GAP (similar style here)

It was my first week back at school and not going to lie to you, waking up so early was a real struggle this week. Got dressed slower, ate my breakfast slower, packed my stuff slower, you get it.
It's taken me the whole week to get back into being a 'morning person' (if things were my way, the day wouldn't start till noon, my mom says I must have a little vampire in me)
It helped that my new homeroom teacher is super cool and fun to be around. I look forward to seeing her every morning which makes it a little easier to get over my disappointment about not going to NYFW this year! I was invited to attend some shows during New York Fashion Week (can you believe it!!!)  and my whole family was going to come along for the trip with me.
But my little bro wasn't feeling well the last few weeks of August (we ended up spending the whole of last Saturday in the emergency room for him) so my mom didn't want to leave in case it was something serious. Total bummer right?? Hopefully I get invited next year because I wanted to go so bad, it was all I could think about!
How has the first week of school been for you? Like your teacher? Happy to see all your friends again?

DO: Have a Picnic

August is National Picnic Month and if you haven't gone on a picnic yet to celebrate, time is running out! (well not really, you can picnic anytime but I take every chance I get to 'celebrate' stuff so let's just say since it's a sort of holiday it's a good reminder! LOL!)
I LOVE picnics even with all the bugs and critters that are flying around, usually driving me insane. The rules are more relaxed than when I have to sit at the table, you can enjoy the sunshine and fresh air AND for some reason, the food always seems to taste so much better than it usually does (weird right?). I think one of my fav things about having a picnic is that I get to spend fun time with my family. We've kind of made it into a tradition to picnic on the first Saturday of each month in the summertime and I know that my little bro and I always look forward to it!
We take a lot of easy foods with us when we picnic. Not too fussy or it won't make it into our basket. Sandwiches mostly (like my fav BLT with avocado, I've listed the recipe below) and stuff we can eat with our hands, sometimes fried chicken, container salads that we put together at home and of course lots of fruit! Grab a large blanket (even better when it's your comfiest) and so it's easy that you almost can't make up an excuse not to do it!
When was the last time you went on a picnic?

BLT with avocado
(makes 4 sandwiches)

8 slices of bacon
1 medium ripe avocado
8 slices bread
1 medium ripe tomato, cut into 8 slices
4 romaine lettuce leaves
mayonnaise (optional)
½ teaspoon minced garlic
¼ teaspoon salt
balsamic vinegar
olive oil

Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp, 5 to 10 minutes (this part should be done by an adult because the bacon is real splattery). Remove it from the pan and place on a paper towel-lined plate so most of the greasiness can soak into the paper towel.
Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, scoop out the insides and mash it up in a medium bowl. Mix in a splash of olive oil and balsamic vinegar to your taste and add garlic, salt and pepper. Stir all together.
Toast bread and spread about 2 tablespoons of the avocado mixture on 4 slices of toast. Top each with 4 pieces of bacon, 2 tomato slices, 1 lettuce leaf, mayonnaise if you like and the remaining toast.

Easy Peasy Breezy

Romper: Zara (similar here and here)    Hat: Gap     Espadrilles: Zara (similar here)     Sunglasses: Ray-Ban     Watch: Daniel Wellington

One of my favourite things about summer is how much easier it is to get dressed and start your day. I don't like putting too much thought into creating a 'look' but when it's cold outside you really have no choice. If you don't think a little bit about what is going to get you through the day, you will be out in the cold like literally!
I've always been a little obsessed with rompers because you just jump in and you're done. Fancy it up with a pair of wedges and a mad good hat (or any accessories that you love) and it can take you through your whole day. Total bonus for me because if there is anything I dread, it's having to change like a million times in one day. I want to be able to hang at home, go to the park, meet my friends at the mall and go out to eat when my parents are too lazy to cook all in the same outfit.
This loose romper from Zara is one of my current favs! First off, it looks like a dress which is mad cool because it makes it a little fancier right from the start. Hidden pockets hold all of my 'stuff' (I'm a bit of a hoarder so I never want to throw anything away. Pockets to keep all my junk with me is priority!)
I've worn it with flip flops and even my Adidas but pairing it with these wedge espadrilles and this adorbs Daniel Wellington watch (it's really helped me not be late anymore!) hits 100 for me!
What do you love the most about getting dressed in the summer time?

EAT: Leggo My Eggo

Do you know that me and Superman are very similar? There is only one thing that can bring him down and that's kryptonite.
Eggos are my kryptonite.
Eggo waffles are something I can not resist ever and I could probably eat them every day of the week if my parents let me. And just like the perfect pair of Chuck Taylors, they go with everything! I can't really cook too many things right now (I just learned how to turn on the oven 😃) but I can for sure work a toaster so even though the little Eggo is not anything fancy, it's real easy for anyone, no matter how old or young you are, to make it your own.
From Nutella and bananas to warmed-up raspberry jam and maple syrup (my fav combination) or you can go totally crazy and pair them with something that tastes less sweet dessert-like and more foodish ('savory' is the word, thanks Google!), everyone can have a signature waffle.
(Oohh, 'signature waffle' does sound fancy, doesn't it?!)
Blueberries and maple syrup were on the menu this morning but I've found some other mad yummy combos that are totally doable with frozen waffles and might just make you scream 'Leggo my Eggo!'

All Cropped Up / GAP

Top: Aeropostale (no longer available)     Culottes: Gap     Shoes: Nine West
Sunglasses: Ray-Ban     Cuff: Emerald Duv

I'm a tried and true 'skinny jeans' girl. They are the most comfortable thing I wear, even more than leggings and I think they make me look taller than I actually am which is a major bonus.
But lately, I've been spying flares everywhere and I can't resist them. Cropped, frayed, way long and distressed, I will take them all!
These cropped flares were on my wish list for awhile and since it's finally gotten warm enough to wear them without boots, they have been on total repeat lately!
Are you a forever 'skinnies' girl or are you getting into all the flares and crops that are everywhere  this year?

Who Do You Think You Are?

Have you ever wondered about who you really are?
Like I mean where your family has come from, who you could be related to and why you look like you do? Not questions most kids my age think about but me, I've always wondered.
(more on why I'm so curious down below!)
I'm sure it must be a question on other people's minds too since there is a whole entire show that features celebrities that are just as curious about where they come from. The program is called 'Who Do You Think You Are' and it follows a different celebrity tracing their ancestors and family trees each episode. I totally LOVE watching it, I think the episode with Jessica Biel has been my favourite so far this year. Check it out on Sunday nights on TLC.
Now onto why I am so curious? You see, I don't really look too much like either of my parents and no, I'm not adopted. Most people say that I look like my mom but I think that's because we both have kind of the same colouring. I mean we both have brown hair and eyes but if you look really closely, that's where it ends. None of our other features are similar. And my dad is light haired and blue eyed and again, we don't really have any of the same features.
I always have people telling me that I look like I'm Asian mixed with something else, I think because my eyes are very almond-shaped but as far as I know, my grandparents came from Italy and Greece and there is no Asian connection at all.
Anyways my parents probably grew tired of hearing me ask the same questions over and over again so last week when we were watching WDYTYA, they asked me if I would like to have my DNA tested with a kit from AncestryDNA and of course I said YES!!

A few days after we ordered it, the kit showed up and I couldn't wait to open it. The kit comes with an easy to follow pamphlet that explains the simple steps to collecting your DNA (it involves your spit so I won't get into it here). You secure the tube holding your sample and shake it up so it mixes with this blue liquid that sits in the tube. And that's pretty much it!
We placed the secure sample into a clear pouch and sealed it, dropped it into the addressed shipping container and then threw that into the mailbox. It takes about 6-8 weeks to get your results back which seems like awhile but I'm so excited that I'm hoping it will fly by.
I will be posting my results as soon as they come in so check back in with me here!

The pamphlet is so easy even a kid could do it!

Off you go DNA! I will wait for you to come back and tell me my story!
